Working Meeting between the UIPVE and COBORU: Summing Up and Setting Priorities for the Future

A working meeting between representatives of the Ukrainian Institute for Plant Variety Examination (UIPVE) and the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing of the Republic of Poland (COBORU) took place in Lviv within the framework of implementing the Action Plan for Plant Variety Testing and Protection of Breeders’ Rights for 2021–2025.
The event was attended by representatives of UIPVE, headed by Director Serhii MELNYK, and a COBORU delegation led by Director Henryk BUJAK.
Over the course of two days, the parties discussed the key outcomes of cooperation between the two institutions under the 2021–2025 Action Plan, which included:
- harmonization of methodological approaches to variety testing;
- participation in international initiatives (UPOV, CPVO);
- exchange of experience in the field of plant variety protection;
- collaboration in implementing innovative assessment methods, including organic testing and post-registration monitoring.
As part of the visit, the following events took place:
- a working group meeting to discuss legal, scientific, and technical aspects of scientific and technical variety examination;
- a visit to the Lviv branch of UIPVE (village of Bilyi Kamin), where participants became acquainted with the specifics of organizing field variety trials;
- a commemoration of prominent Ukrainian and Polish figures at Lychakiv Cemetery, as well as honoring fallen soldiers who gave their lives for Ukraine’s independence and freedom.
The Polish delegation highly praised the quality of variety testing carried out by the Ukrainian Institute for Plant Variety Examination. In particular, it was noted that plant variety testing in Ukraine is conducted in accordance with all European requirements, and Ukrainian experts demonstrate a high level of professionalism, deep knowledge, and a systematic approach to their work.
As a result of the meeting, the parties:
- agreed to prepare a new Cooperation Plan for 2026–2030;
- coordinated a visit to one of COBORU’s branches for practical experience exchange on the organization of environmental variety testing;
- agreed on the tentative date and location of the next bilateral meeting – in 2026 at one of COBORU’s testing centers in Poland.
This visit confirmed the strong partnership between UIPVE and COBORU, based on a shared commitment to quality, openness, innovation, and integration into the European space in the field of plant variety protection.
